Hortus Conclusus

Medieval painters had one image for a soul that belongs only to itself: the hortus conclusus, the enclosed garden. Behind high walls grew roses, lilies and a single fountain, and the gate opened only from the inside. It was not a prison. It was the one place in the world where nothing could enter without being invited. The troubadours sang of it, the mystics prayed in it, and Dante’s circle, the Fedeli d’Amore, treated love as a way into it. Hortus Conclusus is that garden, closed into a circle.

Pink jasper is the soft wall itself, a warm stone that holds rather than shuts out. The carved glass bud has not yet opened, and does not need to: its power is in what it keeps. The cultured pearl, grown slowly around something that entered uninvited, shows what the enclosed heart can do with a wound. Hematite, iron under its golden surface, gives the two hearts their weight. One is pink and one is gold, the heart as it is felt and the heart as it is kept. For the woman who is gentle, but not open to everyone. Who knows that tenderness is not the same as surrender, and that what she guards is not hidden out of fear, but out of value.
